OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH DEPARTMENT

This is a department that provides comprehensive occupational health services to its staff and employees of other organizations. It has highly qualified occupational health practitioners with up to date equipment for examinations and testing.


Services Offered


1. MEDICAL SCREENING OF DRIVERS

This entails examining potential and existing drivers of their physical capability to work as drivers (Fitness for Work). Category of Drivers examined include:

  • Truck and Long distance drivers
  • Public Transport drivers
  • Office drivers

The basic tests for drivers fit for work include:

  • Physical examination
  • Blood pressure check up
  • Random Blood sugar check up
  • Eye check up
  • Sleeping disorders check up
  • Epilepsy check up

The examination is done by qualified occupational health practitioners and a certificate of fitness is issued to the driver.


2. MEDICAL SCREENING OF OFFICE EMPLOYEES

This entails examining potential and existing office employees of their physical capability to work as office employees (Fitness for Work). Category of office employees examined include:

  • Chief Executive Officers
  • Executive Directors
  • Managers
  • Casual employees
  • Other groups of usual employees

The examination is done by qualified occupational health practitioners and a certificate of fitness is issued to the office employee.

3. MEDICAL SCREENING OF INDUSTRIAL EMPLOYEES

This entails examining potential and existing industrial employees of their physical capability to work as industrial employees (Fitness for Work). Category of industrial employees examined include:

  • Employees in the health industry
  • Employees in the Mining industry
  • Employees in the Manufacturing industry
  • Employees in the Construction industry
  • Employees in the Food industry (Food handlers)
  • Employees in the Oil and Gas industry

The examination is done by qualified occupational health practitioners and a certificate of fitness is issued to the industrial employee.

4. MEDICAL SCREENING OF HEARING FUNCTION (AUDIOMETRY)

This entails examining potential and existing employees of their hearing function (Fitness for Work). Category of employees examined include:

  • All employees

The test is done using an audiometry machine. It is carried out by qualified audimetrists and audiologists.

5. MEDICAL SCREENING OF LUNG FUNCTION (SPIROMETRY)

This entails examining potential and existing employees of their lung function (Fitness for Work). Categories of employees examined include:

  • Cement industry employees
  • Wood industry employees
  • Chemicals exposed employees
  • Agricultural industry employees
  • Fumigation employees
  • Construction industry employees
  • Mining industry employees
  • Oil and gas industry employees

6. MEDICAL SCREENING FOR DRUGS OF ABUSE (DOA)

This entails examining potential and existing employees on drugs of abuse using urine samples. A strict standard chain of custody is used at the hospital laboratory. The drugs screened include but not limited to cocaine, cannabinoids, opiates, amphetamine, methamphetamine, barbiturates, morphine, benzodiazepines to mention. Category of employees to be examined include:

  • Truck and Long distance drivers
  • Public Transport drivers
  • Office drivers
  • All employees at risk

7. MEDICAL SCREENING FOR EYE SIGHT (EYE CHECK UPS)

This entails examining potential and existing employees on their eye sight. Examination of the eyes include near vision, far vision, color vision and visual fields. Category of employees to be examined include:

  • All who use computers
  • All drivers
  • Other general employees

8. WELLNESS CHECKUPS

This entail medical checkups that are have been carefully selected to screen all individuals at risk of disease due to age and behavior. These packages include:

  • Basic Health Package
  • Women Care Package
  • Male Package
  • Back to School Package
  • Senior citizen package (Male)
  • Senior citizen package (Female)
  • Alcohol (Liver) package
  • Smoker’s package
  • Cardiac package
  • Renal package
  • Pulmonary (Lung function) package

Wellness Checkup Packages

9. WELLNESS CHAMPIONS TRAINING

This entails training of selected employees in an organization who have volunteered to be role models in promoting individual and organizational health in its fullness. The training has the following topics:

  • What individual and organizational wellness means.
  • How individual and organizational wellness can be created and implemented in the organization.
  • Roles and responsibilities of wellness champions.
  • Roles and responsibilities of management.
  • Benefits of individual and organizational wellness.
  • This training takes 1 day initially for wellness champions and 3 hours for management. The training then has a follow up monthly on the action points developed and implementations made. The training is carried out by qualified wellness trainers. Certificates are also provided to those who participate.

10. HEALTH AND SAFETY TRAINING

This entails training employees on the health and safety management systems at the workplace. Topics include:

  • Health and safety management system.
  • Components of a health and safety management system.
  • Occupational Health and Safety act of Uganda.
  • Roles and responsibilities of employers and employees on health and safety at the workplace.
  • Hazard identification and risk assessment at the workplace.
  • Hierarchy of Controls
  • Fire management
  • Role of First Aid at the workplace.

This training takes 2 days. The training then has a follow up monthly on the action points developed and implementations made. The training is carried out by qualified health and safety trainers. Certificates are also provided to those who participate.

11. FREE HEALTH EDUCATION SESSIONS

This entails empowering the masses with information on the common illness and injuries at the workplace and homes. Preventive and protective measures are given to the employees to enhance health and safety at the workplace.
